A Gentlemen's Race is a type of unsanctioned, unmarshalled road ride established in the Pacific Northwest, USA in 2008. Inspired by the sort of riding of theRAPHA CONTINENTAL PROJECT, with a nod to the European Classics races, a penchant for gravel and an appreciation for small communities, people and places in outlying areas, the Gentlemen's Race was meant to push the boundaries typical of bicycle racing.
Using a proprietary ranking and handicap system, teams of four riders depart with those estimated to be slowest first and the fastest departing last. Part Team Time Trial, part alleycat race, part Cannonball Run and each team must work and finish together.
That factor above anything else may prove as the great equalizer for the race.
Riders must be on a bicycle (no tandems) that is equipped with drop handlebars.
Teams must start and finish together. All riders must record their ride on STRAVAand finish within 30 seconds of each other. Final rider to cross will be the team's time.
Multi course checkpoints. Teams will be required to take a team photo at each checkpoint with an extra photo taken at the team's choice anywhere on the course.
The race is self-supported. All mechanicals or injuries must be overcome by the team.
The unmarked course will be kept secret until the evening before the race when riders will be emailed a map, cue sheets and .gpx file for GPS units. The course is in and around Southern, NH and is approximately 100km (62 miles) with 25km or more of dirt & gravel roads and approximately 5000 feet of elevation gain. There are multiple checkpoints along the course where all teams will need to stop, check-in via a photo and leave together.
